German 1916 “Gold for Iron” Medal
Imperial German 1916 Gold for Iron Medal given to those who donated gold for the war cause.
Constructed of blackened metal, the obverse illustrating a rightward facing kneeling woman offering a gold necklace, inscribed “In Eiserner Zeit” (In Iron Times) and dated “1916” below the reverse inscribed “Gold gab ich zur Wehr, Eisen nahm ich zur Ehr” (I gave gold for defence, took iron for honour), with oak leaves below, and maker marked “Hosaeus” on the bottom. Ca 40mm in diamenter. This exampel comes with it’s original wrapping paper!
